5149. Portrait of a lovely young girl in a white dress against a blue sky. Artist’s board with later frame. Mid 19th century. Image 9” X 12’. $875.
5132. The church view is an American country painting full of detail with two figures walking by a church with a cross marked graveyard. The church is dated 1701 above the door on one wing and 1834 at the other transome. There is more detail to explore here on what is likely a European scene. Professionally cleaned, later silvered frame. Oil on labelled (Chicago vendor) artist's board, sight 11' x 17 1/2". Late 19th century. $325.
5137. The landscape scene is "A Wooded Path" by Ada Stone, 1879-1916. This pleasant country scene is oil on canvas with a fine later gilt frame. Ada Stone was a talented artist who worked in London at the turn of the century. She painted miniature portraits, still lives and figures and exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists. Her brushwork is fine and meticulous and full of light. Her paintings reflect the 19th century English approach to nature and landscape painting that is based on direct visual experience. Sight 17 1/4" x 13 1/4". $1860.
"Old Baldy, Winter Day" by F. M. Moore,
Carmel, CA, 1877-1967, oil on canvas,
signed lower right.
23 1/2" X 33 1/2" $950
American scene on board, 11 ½” X 15 ½” overall. A couple at shore views a sunbeam highlighting a distant town. $650.
The scene depicts eight revelers beside Bacchus, each engaged in the conversation as well as the wine. The work is of the school or possibly the studio of Diego Velazquez, 1599-1660.
Strong use of colors and dramatic shadows give this piece great appeal. At center, the wine bowl is our favorite blue on white Delft. The frame is later and of very high quality as well as correct in style for the period. Overall size is 29” X 36”.
An American portrait of a gentleman, circa 1840s, 35” X 30”. Done by an artist of training and great talent and professionally conserved. Later gilt framing. A delight to the eye. $700
The charming early Italian capriccio is an oil on canvas within an antique but later frame. A capriccio, of course, is defined as "a whim of expression of fancy". Here a busy port scene is showing, with costumed figures at the foreground amongst ancient ruins. Boats are unloaded against the distant village and landscape view. It reminds us of Carthaginian views by Vernet and Lorraine. Overall 36" X 56" including framing.
